Booking & Payment

Once your deposit, signed Travel Agreement, and Customer Information Form are all received, your reservation is confirmed. You will then receive an orientation e-packet with all relevant information about your tour, including the itinerary, a packing checklist, and a detailed participant questionnaire.

On each tour page you will find a Book Now button that walks you through the full booking process. We accept the following payment methods:

  • Credit or debit card
  • Zelle — send to info@bluebackpacktravel.com (no surcharge)
  • Check — payable to The Blue Backpack LLC
Switzerland December 2026: $750 deposit due at booking, balance due 90 days before departure
Tokyo February 2027 and all future tours: 25% deposit due at booking, balance due 120 days before departure
Payment Plans Available: Spread your balance over 3-9 monthly installments with no interest or fees. All payments must be completed by the final payment deadline. Minimum $500/month.

Cancellation fees depend on how far in advance you cancel. Your deposit is non-refundable. The complete cancellation schedule is:

  • 120+ days before departure: Forfeit deposit (25%)
  • 90-119 days: Forfeit 50% of tour price
  • 75-89 days: Forfeit 80% of tour price
  • 60-74 days: Forfeit 90% of tour price
  • 30-59 days: Forfeit 95% of tour price
  • 0-29 days: Forfeit 100% of tour price (no refund)

Please refer to Section 5 of your Travel Agreement for complete cancellation policy details. This is one of the reasons we strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance — it can protect your investment if the unexpected happens.

If The Blue Backpack needs to cancel a tour, we will notify you as soon as possible and make every effort to offer alternatives — including transferring your deposit to a future tour or, where applicable, a refund of payments received.

Cancellations due to circumstances beyond our control — such as severe weather, political unrest, or other force majeure events — are subject to the terms outlined in the Travel Agreement. Please refer to Section 5 and Section 25 of the Travel Agreement for complete details.

Each tour page includes a detailed breakdown of what is and is not included. In general, all accommodations, transportation during the tour, planned activities, gratuities, and some meals are included.

The following are not included: international flights, visa fees, travel insurance, and personal expenses. Please refer to the individual tour page and your Travel Agreement for complete details.

The Tours

Groups are typically 6 women, with a maximum of 8 depending on the tour. Tours are confirmed with a minimum of four participants.

If enrollment falls short by 90 days before departure, I'll contact you personally to talk through our options — whether that's waiting for more travelers, adjusting dates, or proceeding as a more intimate group with modified pricing. No surprises — we'll make the decision together.

I typically run between two and four tours per year. Tour length depends on the destination but is usually between 8 and 14 days.

I grew up in Switzerland, lived in Germany after graduating, and backpacked extensively through Southeast Asia and East Africa before moving to the United States. I lead tours to places I know intimately — destinations that rarely appear on standard tourist itineraries.

I know how full life can be, and my goal is to offer a truly restorative journey — one where you can unwind physically, mentally, and emotionally, without having to plan a single detail yourself.

Every tour I design is different — shaped by a theme, a place, and a sense of curiosity. Past journeys have taken us deep into Lyon's culinary traditions, through the gardens of Paris and the South of France, into weaving communities in Ecuador, along trails in the Andes and into the Amazon forest, and across Switzerland's distinct linguistic regions on foot and at the table. Each experience is crafted with care, built around what makes a destination truly come alive. I'm always open to suggestions — if there's a place or theme that speaks to you, let's talk.

The most important difference: I am your guide, and I created the tour. I know exactly what to expect, and I am with you throughout the journey to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Each tour page includes the specific activity level, but in general you should be comfortable walking 2–8 miles per day on varied terrain — cobblestones, hills, and stairs are part of the experience. You should also be able to manage your own luggage, including carrying it up and down stairs and on and off trains, buses, and trams.

Packing light makes a significant difference. If you have specific mobility concerns, reach out and I'll help you assess whether a particular tour is a good fit.

Absolutely. I intentionally build free time into every tour so you can wander, rest, or pursue your own interests. The balance varies by destination — cities like Paris or Milan offer so much that schedules tend to be fuller, but even on busier days there is flexibility.

You are always welcome to skip a planned activity to do your own thing. Please keep in mind that there are no refunds for activities you choose not to join. The goal is for everyone to have the trip they want, while still sharing our group experiences together.

Travel Logistics

I'll provide recommended flight times and arrival and departure windows to help the group arrive together. I recommend booking directly with the airline yourself — this gives you the most flexibility and protection.

If you need help finding the right flights or have questions about timing, I'm happy to assist. Just remember to purchase travel insurance that covers flight delays and cancellations.

Usually not. I prefer to arrive at the destination a couple of days before the group to take care of last-minute details and make sure everything is ready for your arrival.

Please notify me immediately if your flight is delayed so I can coordinate accordingly. I will do my best to adjust plans where possible, though additional costs may apply depending on the circumstances. This is another reason travel insurance that covers flight disruptions is so important.

Yes — I can usually arrange additional accommodations for you subject to availability. It's not uncommon for participants to extend their stay after the tour, sometimes meeting a spouse or travel companion at the final destination to continue the adventure independently.

Most phones work internationally, but contact your carrier before departure to arrange an international plan and avoid unexpected charges. Many travelers use WhatsApp (which works over WiFi) to stay connected at no cost.

I set up a WhatsApp group for every tour so the whole group can communicate easily with each other and reach me at any time.

On the Trip

I personally select all accommodations — comfortable hotels, boutique properties, lodges, or vacation rentals that capture the authentic character of each destination. I work directly with these properties (no commissions), and any discounts I negotiate are passed straight to you.

All tour prices are based on single occupancy — your own private room. I know how valuable it is to have your own space to unwind after a day of exploring, during the morning rush, and while adjusting to jet lag. All rooms are non-smoking.

Traveling with a friend and would like to share a room? Let me know before booking and I'll do my best to arrange it. Please note that if your roommate cancels and cannot be replaced, the single occupancy rate will apply. Room upgrades are sometimes possible too — just ask when you book.

Please share any dietary restrictions, allergies, or preferences when you book. I'll work with restaurants and accommodations in advance to accommodate you wherever possible.

That said, some destinations are more challenging than others. Gluten-free and dairy-free options, for example, can be limited in Europe where bread, pasta, and cheese are central to the cuisine. I will always do my best to find alternatives, but part of the experience is immersing yourself in authentic local food culture.

The best way to reach me is by email or text. I also set up a WhatsApp group for each tour — once we're abroad, everyone can communicate with each other and reach me easily whenever needed.

Health & Safety

Yes — travel insurance is strongly recommended and in some cases required. At minimum, I recommend coverage that includes:

  • Medical coverage (minimum $100,000)
  • Emergency medical evacuation (minimum $50,000)
  • Trip cancellation and interruption
  • Lost or delayed baggage

The extra expense is well worth the peace of mind — especially for international travel where unexpected situations can be costly.

Insurers I recommend: Seven Corners, World Nomads, Travel Guard by AIG, Allianz Travel, and AAA (for members). You can also use SquareMouth to compare policies side by side and find the best fit for your trip.

Please see your Travel Agreement for complete insurance requirements.

Vaccination requirements vary by destination. I'll share specific health recommendations when your tour details are confirmed. I always recommend consulting a travel medicine specialist or your personal doctor 6–8 weeks before departure — they can advise on routine vaccines, destination-specific requirements, and any medications you may need.

Please disclose any medical conditions, mobility concerns, or special needs at the time of booking so we can assess together whether the tour is a good fit. Many of our destinations involve moderate physical activity — walking on uneven terrain, stairs, and public transportation.

Please be aware that accessibility standards vary significantly from country to country, and some locations may not be fully disability-friendly. I will always do my best to accommodate, but I cannot make guarantees. Please refer to Section 7 of your Travel Agreement for complete details.
